Student Membership Options
The City of Coventry swimming programme has placed swimmers on Major Games team since 1988. Coventry is
one of the top swimming programmes in the country, especially in University Swimming, and this has enabled an
established group of swimmers to work towards their goals in the best possible environment. We are also the
West Midlands Region Beacon Programme.
There are three options for swimming available in Coventry for students:
Option 1 - Elite Squad
The Elite Squad utilises the city centre Olympic sized 50 metres pool and the University of Warwick 25
meters pool. The scheme is headed by Adam Ruckwood and the supporting staff include; Swimming Scholarship
Mentor and Scholarship Staff from Coventry University as physiotherapists & other specialist strength
coaches & Sports Science support staff.
There is a high training standard within this group, which includes Coventry's top swimmers. Individual
training plans are put together for both the pool and land work sessions. There is a minimum standard of an
average of 9 sessions a week attendance. Acceptance into the group is after discussions with Adam
Ruckwood.
All students will become members of Coventry Swimming Club and all competitions that are entered would be
under the name of Coventry. You also will be expected to join the Swimming Society at the University in order
to represent the University at the BUCS Championships.
Option 2 - High Performance Student
This option does not have as high a commitment level. Training is divided between the University sessions
available during the week with other sessions supplemented via attendance of the Senior Performance Squad
sessions at the Club.
As Option 1 all students would be expected to become members of Coventry Swimming Club and also the
Swimming Society in order to be covered for insurance etc. Attendance at competitions would again be expected
to be under the name of Coventry, especially those of Midland level or above.
Option 3 - University Swimming Only
This option would only include the University Sessions that are available during term time. If students
wanted to compete in competitions other than BUCS competitions they could become a member of Coventry but
would not need to pay a monthly training fee. Again, competitions of Midland standard or above it would be
expected to enter as Coventry.
